Sassa Old Age Grant Scandal: Suspects Arrested in Alleged Kickback Scheme

Police Apprehension and Allegations

Police apprehended a 70-year-old suspect following revelations from a whistleblower within the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) regarding an alleged scheme offering old age grants in exchange for a purported kickback of R1,000.

The arrest occurred at Sassa’s office in Roodeport, Johannesburg, where the suspect and another individual were taken into custody. They are slated to appear in court on Friday, facing charges of corruption as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The Alleged Scheme

According to Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale, the suspects proposed a plan to the Sassa official involving the enrollment of individuals onto the old age grant payment list for a fee of R1,000 per person. “The suspects are said to have promised that each application would be handed in accompanied with R1,000 for processing,” Mogale stated.

A significant sum of more than R38,000 had already been exchanged as part of the scheme. “The initial batch of 15 applications were handed to the employee with R15,000 enticements to process the application outside of the normal procedure. The second batch of 20 applications and R23,150 were handed over on Wednesday,” Mogale added.

Additional Charges and Sassa’s Ongoing Battle Against Fraud

Furthermore, additional charges were pressed against the suspects upon the discovery of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in their vehicle.

Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu disclosed last year that Sassa had incurred losses exceeding R50 million due to fraud and corruption over a span of two-and-a-half years. This included over 700 cases involving 40 implicated officials.
